JOB SUMMARY

The position holder will engage local stakeholders and partners to adopt technology that facilitates conservation outcomes. The Conservation Technology Assistant will support the Conservation Technology Officer's daily tasks. If necessary, need support to the project team to implement activities focused on training and capacity building (e.g. SMART software) and other technologies when available. The position holder is expected to engage with local partners and beneficiaries, encouraging collaboration and technology adoption training (not limited to the SMART suite of applications, Earth Ranger, Kobo Toolbox, and Wildlife Insights) that improves the capacity of Protected Areas Administrations and Local Government Agencies. This position will also provide GIS support (mapping and maintenance of GIS databases) to the WCS Mongolia program on an ‘urgency of need and availability basis and supervise staff assigned to support the position’s responsibilities.

ORGANIZATION BACKGROUND

Headquartered in New York, the Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) is a US non-profit, tax-exempt, organization established in 1895 that saves wildlife and wild places by understanding critical issues, crafting science-based solutions, and taking conservation actions that benefit nature and humanity.  In Mongolia WCS has been working since 2003 with government, communities, NGO’s, and industry partners in conducting research, protecting biodiversity, ensuring landscape connectivity, and supporting efforts that lead to the sustainable management of natural resources.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • In personally participate in the training and follow-up mentoring of Natural Resources Law Enforcement officials (PA rangers, Environmental specialists, Eco-Police, and other officers) in the use of SMART software and associated technology.
  • To assist know how to collect SMART Data, raw data gathering, follow up, and data quality analysis.
  • Provide prompt technical assistance to solve technical problems with the SMART Mobile application installed on a 'rugged' smartphone;
  • Pay attention to supporting law enforcement partners in planning and implementing patrols and identifying key areas for management interventions using SMART outputs and organizing compulsory documents related to SMART database works.
  • Responsible for GIS and Remote Sensing Data Management (Digitization of landscape features on remote sensing imagery as needed) for the WCS Mongolia program and updating it, backup of GIS and Remote Sensing database;
  • Support the WCS conservation program as time and capacity allow and write an efficient performing report.
  • Participate in meetings and workshops to represent the mission and vision of WCS when necessary.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • A Bachelor’s degree or equivalent professional qualification in conservation technology, and geographic information systems, or Ecology/Conservation;
  • A minimum of 2+ years professional experience relevant to the responsibilities above;
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office Software;
  • Understanding of GIS software;
  • Inter-med level of knowledge of English;
  • Self-motivated and willingness to learn;
  • Good skills and willingness to travel to remote field locations;
  • Good team worker and interpersonal and communication skills;
