JOB SUMMARY
The Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) Mongolia Program is seeking a dedicated individual to fill the position of Wildlife Biologist. The successful candidate will be responsible for conducting field research and data analysis to support conservation science initiatives. Working within the WCS team, the Wildlife Biologist will contribute to the design and implementation of new conservation science projects aligned with the WCS Mongolia country program’s strategic mission and values.
ORGANIZATION BACKGROUND
WCS is a US non-profit organization founded in 1895, dedicated to saving wildlife and wild places through science-based solutions and conservation actions. With over a century of experience and a global presence in more than 60 nations, WCS has played a pivotal role in establishing over 150 protected areas worldwide. Leveraging biological knowledge and fostering partnerships, the WCS office officially registered in the capital Ulaanbaatar in 2003. Over the past twenty years, WCS Mongolia has implemented activities addressing wildlife health, trade, animal movements, community engagement, and building awareness of and support for protected areas. Through the Mongolia Program, collaboration with governments, communities, NGOs, and industries is prioritized to maintain biodiversity, promote landscape connectivity, and contribute to sustainable resource management. The program's activities encompass wildlife research, protected area and community support, wildlife law development and enforcement, and sustainable infrastructure development.
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES
- Participate in fieldwork, analysis, and reporting for WCS research projects, including ungulate surveys and conduct statistical analysis using R and GIS tools.
- Manage large datasets gathered during fieldwork, ensuring accuracy, organization, and accessibility for analysis and reporting.
- Adapt research strategies to changing field conditions, demonstrating flexibility and innovation in response to evolving conservation challenges.
- Prepare comprehensive reports based on fieldwork and analysis findings, emphasizing the implications for wildlife conservation and management.
- Collaborate with the team to develop presentations for stakeholders related to research outcomes, ensuring effective communication of conservation messages.
- Contribute to the preparation of scientific publications focusing on research questions, disseminating findings within the scientific and conservation community.
- Represent WCS at both international and national level meetings, seizing opportunities as they arise.
- Stay current with relevant research publications, analytical techniques, and methodologies associated with the projects.
- Effectively communicate WCS mission and vision to stakeholders, emphasizing the importance of wildlife conservation and research.
- Provide necessary support to the WCS Mongolia program, aligning with the organization's goals and mission.
- Work closely with the team to ensure coordination and communication, fostering a collaborative and inclusive work environment.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Education: University Degree in the Natural Sciences.
- Experience:
- 3-5 years of hands-on experience in field projects, including conducting basic analysis and preparing reports.
- Proven ability to lead field trip logistics, ensuring efficient and well-organized operations.
- Demonstrated experience in managing field teams, displaying effective leadership and coordination skills.
- Technology and Software Skills: Proficiency in relevant technology and software tools for wildlife research and data analysis.
- Language Skills: Proficient in spoken and written English and Mongolian.

- Strong interpersonal skills and the capacity to collaborate effectively with colleagues, partners, and stakeholders.
