JOB SUMMARY
The Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) Mongolia Program is seeking a Project Coordinator to play an important role in coordinating the implementation of conservation strategies outlined in the recent project titled "Locally-Led Strategies in the South Gobi: Ensuring Habitat Connectivity for Mongolia’s Nomadic Ungulates." This role involves coordinating activities across various strategic approaches, with a particular focus on supporting the climate adaptation strategy of the project. Key responsibilities include designing and implementing a monitoring and evaluation framework, coordinating fieldwork and community engagement efforts, and developing partnerships with relevant stakeholders. The ideal candidate will possess strong project coordination skills across teams, experience in organizing community initiatives, proficiency in monitoring and evaluation techniques, and excellent interpersonal and communication abilities. Additionally, this role expects the person to spend extensive time in the field working with community partners. This position offers an exciting opportunity to contribute to the conservation and sustainable development of the South Gobi region while collaborating closely with local communities and stakeholders.
ORGANIZATION BACKGROUND
WCS is a US non-profit organization founded in 1895, dedicated to saving wildlife and wild places through science-based solutions and conservation actions. With over a century of experience and a global presence in more than 60 nations, WCS has played a pivotal role in establishing over 150 protected areas worldwide. Leveraging biological knowledge and fostering partnerships, the WCS office officially registered in the capital Ulaanbaatar in 2003. Over the past twenty years, WCS Mongolia has implemented activities addressing wildlife health, trade, animal movements, community engagement, and building awareness of and support for protected areas. Through the Mongolia Program, collaboration with governments, communities, NGOs, and industries is prioritized to maintain biodiversity, promote landscape connectivity, and contribute to sustainable resource management. The program's activities encompass wildlife research, protected area and community support, wildlife law development and enforcement, and sustainable infrastructure development.
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES
Coordinate the implementation of conservation strategies outlined in the "Locally-Led Strategies in the South Gobi: Ensuring Habitat Connectivity for Mongolia’s Nomadic Ungulates" project, with a specific focus on supporting the climate adaptation strategy.
Monitoring and Evaluation (M&E):

Establish a unified monitoring and evaluation framework to track progress and outcomes across all project strategies.

Coordinate data collection efforts, including qualitative and quantitative data, with community partners and wildlife datasets.

Evaluate the effectiveness of conservation interventions and provide recommendations for adapting strategies as needed.

Document best practices, lessons learned, and success stories from climate adaptation activities.
Project Coordination:

Coordinate activities across multiple strategic approaches and teams, ensuring alignment with overall project goals and objectives.

Liaise with government agencies, railway companies, and other partners to facilitate collaboration and coordination.

Ensure synergy and alignment between strategies to maximize impact and achieve project objectives holistically.

Identify opportunities for collaboration and joint initiatives that leverage the strengths of each strategy to achieve common goals.

Represent WCS Mongolia at meetings, conferences, and events to promote the integrated approach and mobilize support for conservation initiatives in the South Gobi landscape.

Support WCS Mongolia programs as needed, if time allows, to contribute to broader conservation efforts in the region.
Fieldwork and Community Engagement:

Conduct frequent fieldwork in the South Gobi region to engage with local communities and stakeholders.

Coordinate fieldwork activities related to climate adaptation, including data collection, stakeholder engagement, and community outreach efforts.

Facilitate community meetings and workshops to promote participatory decision-making processes.
QUALIFICATIONS
Education & Experience:

Bachelors or higher degree in environmental science, natural resource management, climate change adaptation or a related field.

3-5 years of experience in project monitoring and evaluation, coordination or management, preferably in the non-profit or environmental sector.
Skills:

Strong project coordination skills.

Experience in organizing community engagement initiatives and workshops.

Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to effectively engage with diverse stakeholders.

Demonstrated proficiency in monitoring and evaluation (M&E) techniques, including data collection, analysis, and reporting.

Ability to design and implement M&E frameworks to track project progress and outcomes.

Proficiency in data analysis and evaluation to assess project effectiveness and inform decision-making.

Demonstrated ability to build and maintain effective partnerships with local communities, herder groups, government agencies, and other stakeholders.

Strong problem-solving and decision-making abilities.

Flexibility and adaptability to work in dynamic and challenging environments, particularly in remote areas and countryside locations.
