The Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) Mongolia Program is seeking a qualified consultant to lead efforts in empowering women as climate adaptation champions, with a specific focus on sustainable water management and conservation action. Women in the Gobi, particularly in Dornogovi and Umnugovi, play a crucial role in managing water resources at the household level and are key conservation actors. This consultancy will engage a network of 25 women champions, enabling them to share their stories and the conservation actions they or their communities are undertaking. Additionally, the women champions will explore and discuss the connections between water availability, conservation, and the impact on key wildlife species such as the khulan and the goitered gazelle, sharing their insights with the broader community.
Objectives of the Consultant
1. Developing a Women’s Leadership and Mentorship Program
- Design and implement a structured program for local women, focusing on leadership skills, climate adaptation and sustainable water management.
- Identify and engage 25 women as climate adaptation champions.
- Facilitate mentorship opportunities between experienced women leaders and emerging champions.
2. Organizing Women’s Engagement Events in Dornogovi and Umnugovi
- Plan and coordinate at least four interactive workshops, discussions, and other events to enhance women’s leadership in climate adaptation and water management.
- Create safe spaces for women to share their experiences and challenges related to water resources and conservation efforts.
3. Strengthening Community Participation and Knowledge Sharing
- Establish and manage an online network (e.g., Facebook group) to facilitate peer learning and information exchange among the women champions.
- Develop and distribute resources and training materials to support women’s involvement in sustainable water management and conservation actions.
4. Documenting Stories and Achievements
- Collect and document at least five personal stories of women champions in climate adaptation and conservation.
- Record key achievements, challenges, and lessons learned from the engagement initiatives.
- Produce reports and case studies showcasing the impact of women-led conservation efforts.
Expected Outputs:
- A leadership program for 25 women champions focused on climate adaptation and sustainable water management, designed and fully implemented by the consultant.
- Four engagement events successfully organized in Dornogovi and Umnugovi, including workshops and focus group discussions (at least two events to be held before the mid-term report).
- At least five personal stories collected and documented, highlighting the experiences of women champions in climate adaptation and conservation efforts.
- Mid-term progress report (at least 2 pages) submitted by June 1, 2025, summarizing activities, progress, and outcomes.
- Final report (at least 8 pages) submitted by November 30, 2025, detailing activities, key learnings, recommendations, and insights for future engagement.
Timeline:
- The consultancy will be completed by the end of December 2025.
Qualifications and experience
- Minimum 3 years of experience in community engagement, gender and development, education, or related fields.
- Experience working with local nomadic communities.
- Strong understanding of locally led conservation, climate adaptation, natural resource management, and women’s empowerment.
- Proven ability to design and implement training programs, workshops, and mentorship initiatives.
- Good communication skills in Mongolian and English.
- Experience using social media and digital platforms for community engagement.
- Skills in storytelling, documentation, and report writing.
