    JOB SUMMARY

The Social Scientist will work within a team setting to design and lead field surveys to advance the understanding of the prevalence of the collection, hunting, and trade of wildlife and plant products in Mongolia, with a particular emphasis on the saiga horn trade. The Social Scientist will lead in the analysis, reporting, interpretation and disseminating of results to stakeholders and working to use these results to develop and justify actionable recommendations. A successful applicant will have an interest in social science and wildlife conservation, and be motivated to work outside of the office setting, while having a strong willingness to learn new skills and apply them. This is a full-time position with project funding for a 3-year period and possibility for extension pending project support.  The ability to work in rural and remote settings is a requirement.

ORGANIZATION BACKGROUND

Headquartered in New York, the Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) is a US non-profit, tax-exempt, organization established in 1895 that saves wildlife and wild places by understanding critical issues, crafting science-based solutions, and taking conservation actions that benefit nature and humanity.  In Mongolia WCS has been working since 2003 with government, communities, NGO’s, and industry partners in conducting research, protecting biodiversity, ensuring landscape connectivity, and supporting efforts that lead to the sustainable management of natural resources.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Design and conduct field surveys associated with understanding behavior associated with the trade in wildlife and plant parts;
  • Analyze, interpret, and communicate results to stakeholders;
  • Contribute to timely completion of required reporting;
  • Develop actionable conservation recommendations from result;
  • Lend support to WCS colleagues and projects as time allows;
  • Represent WCS’s conservation mission and vision.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • MSc or equivalent work experience in field of human dimensions of conservation or social sciences;
  • Demonstrated analytical skills;
  • Excellent communication skills;
  • Proficiency in speaking and writing in English and Mongolian.
