JOB SUMMARY 

The WCS Mongolia Program is hiring a Communication Officer to manage our social media presence and facilitate community outreach and stakeholder engagement initiatives. In this role, the person will be responsible for crafting content that communicates our program updates and mission on social platforms and supporting on-the-ground programs by organizing workshops and designing effective awareness strategies for multiple audiences, including local stakeholders. The individual will engage with local stakeholders through travel to various provinces and locations in Mongolia.

ORGANIZATION BACKGROUND 

WCS is a US non-profit organization founded in 1895, dedicated to saving wildlife and wild places through science-based solutions and conservation actions. With over a century of experience and a global presence in more than 60 nations, WCS has played a pivotal role in establishing over 150 protected areas worldwide. Leveraging biological knowledge and fostering partnerships, the WCS office officially registered in the capital Ulaanbaatar in 2003. Over the past twenty years, WCS Mongolia has implemented activities addressing wildlife health, trade, animal movements, community engagement, and building awareness of and support for protected areas. Through the Mongolia Program, collaboration with governments, communities, NGOs, and industries is prioritized to maintain biodiversity, promote landscape connectivity, and contribute to sustainable resource management. The program's activities encompass wildlife research, protected area and community support, wildlife law development and enforcement, and sustainable infrastructure development. 

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES  

50%

  • Social Media Management:
    • Develop and execute a social media strategy to enhance program visibility.
    • Create content that effectively communicates our mission and program updates.
  • Communication Material Development:
    • Create visually appealing materials (posters, videos, etc.), maintaining brand consistency, that promote key programs.
    • Lead the interpretation of key research and conservation messages to make them understandable to the public.
    • Update WCS Website 
  • Representation and Collaboration:
    • Act as a representative of WCS at forums and events.
    • Work closely with the team to ensure coordination and internal communication, fostering a collaborative and inclusive work environment.

  • Program Support:
    • Coordinate with national and local government stakeholders to promote and facilitate workshops and events in field sites, enhancing awareness of wildlife conservation and law enforcement.
    • Facilitate communication with the local project coordinator and other key national and local stakeholders, with a primary focus on the Ulaanbaatar Railway Company, to promote wildlife habitat connectivity.
    • Tailor communication strategies to diverse local audiences and use data analysis to assess the effectiveness of communication strategies.
    • Provide necessary field support to the WCS Mongolia program, aligning with the organization's goals and mission

QUALIFICATIONS  

  • Education & Experience:
    • Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Marketing, Public Relations, or related field.
    • 3-5 years of communication experience, preferably in the non-profit or environmental sector.
  • Skills:
    • Proficient in social media management and content creation.
    • Experience in organizing community engagement initiatives and workshops.
    • Strong collaboration and teamwork skills.
    • Good networking skills
    • Ability to multitask and prioritize
    • Willing to travel remote areas and countryside
    • Analytical skills for evaluating communication strategies.
    • Ability to adapt communication styles for diverse audiences.
  • Technology & Language Proficiency:
    • Proficiency in relevant communication technology and software.
    • Proficient in spoken and written English and Mongolian.
  • Personal Attributes: 
    • Positive attitude towards challenges and a demonstrated ability to work well within a team. 
    • Strong interpersonal skills and the capacity to collaborate effectively with colleagues, partners, and stakeholders.
