ORGANIZATION BACKGROUND:
The Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS), a US-based non-profit organization founded in 1895, is dedicated to safeguarding wildlife and wild places through science-driven solutions and impactful conservation actions. With over 125 years of experience, WCS operates in more than 60 nations and has been instrumental in the establishment and management of over 150 protected areas worldwide. Guided by deep biological expertise and collaborative partnerships, WCS expanded its mission to Mongolia in 2003, officially registering its office in the capital, Ulaanbaatar, to support conservation efforts across the region.
MONGOLIA PROGRAM OVERVIEW:
WCS Mongolia, established in Ulaanbaatar in 2003, has worked for over 20 years to protect the country’s biodiversity and ecosystems, with a focus on the Southern Gobi and Eastern Steppe. The program is driven by the mission to safeguard and restore Mongolia’s ecological integrity, emphasizing biodiversity, ecosystem connectivity, and sustainable natural resource management. WCS collaborates with governments, communities, NGOs, and industries to achieve these goals. Key initiatives include wildlife research, protected area management, community partnerships, policy development, sustainable infrastructure, One Health, and climate adaptation, all aimed at ensuring the long-term health and resilience of Mongolia’s ecosystems.
JOB SUMMARY:
The GIS Assistant will support WCS Mongolia in spatial data management, processing, and mapping to advance conservation goals. This role requires strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and the ability to work independently and as part of a team. The GIS Assistant will assist with daily program tasks and provide support for training and capacity building, including SMART software, Kobo Toolbox, and other technologies.
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:
Spatial Data Management and Processing:
- Collect, clean, and organize spatial and non-spatial data from various sources, including GPS data and field surveys;
- Maintain GIS databases, ensuring data accuracy, integrity, and security;
- Process raw spatial data to create standardized datasets for analysis and visualization;
- Support data analysis of SMART patrols and other data;
Mapping and Visualization:
- Produce high-quality maps and visualizations for reports, presentations, and publications;
- Develop and update maps of key conservation areas, including wildlife habitats and land use;
- Create thematic maps based on project requirements;
Support Field Operations:
- Assist in the preparation of field data collection tools, including mobile GIS applications;
- Process and analyze field data collected via GPS and other technologies;
- Provide GIS and technology related support to field teams as needed;
Reporting and Training:
- Prepare and present GIS analyses and maps to project teams and stakeholders;
- Assist in writing reports that include GIS outputs;
- Support training related to SMART and GIS for local stakeholders;
QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE
Education & Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree in GIS, Geography, Environmental Science, or a related field;
- Proficiency in GIS software such as ArcGIS, QGIS, or equivalent;
- Basic skills in spatial data processing and mapping;
- Experience managing and maintaining GIS databases;
- Familiarity with GPS and mobile data collection tools;
- A minimum of 2 years professional experience relevant to the responsibilities above;
Skills:
- Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail;
- Ability to work effectively as part of a team and independently;
- Communication skills to convey technical information clearly;
- Willingness to travel to remote field locations;
Desirable:
- Knowledge of conservation science and ecological datasets;
- Familiarity with open-source GIS tools and platforms;
- Experience with SMART and Kobo Toolbox software;
Language Proficiency
- Proficient in spoken and written Mongolian and English;
