The Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) Mongolia seeks a short-term Umnogobi Local Coordinator Consultancy (September–December 2025) to support snow leopard monitoring, biodiversity research, and community-based conservation activities in Umnugobi Province. The consultant will assist with camera trap operations, field expeditions, and community engagement, including supporting Community-Based Organizations (CBOs) to access funding and strengthen natural resource management.

Requirements: Strong knowledge of Umnugobi’s landscape, wildlife, and communities; proven commitment to conservation; ability to work in remote conditions; excellent communication skills in Mongolian.

1. Background

The Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) Mongolia implements conservation activities in Umnugovi Province to protect nomadic ungulates, snow leopards and their ecosystems, support biodiversity monitoring, and strengthen community-based conservation. Current work includes camera trapping, wildlife collaring, and supporting Community-Based Organizations (CBOs) to manage natural resources and access funding.

WCS Mongolia seeks a local coordinator based in Umnogobi Province to provide field and community liaison support to ensure the effective delivery of these activities.

2. Objective

The consultant will coordinate and assist in research, monitoring, and community engagement activities in Umnugobi Province, ensuring strong collaboration between WCS, local communities, and government stakeholders.

3. Scope of Work

Fieldwork and Research Support

  • Participate in field expeditions across Umnugovi Province, including remote mountain areas.
  • Assist in site selection for research and biodiversity monitoring.
  • Support snow leopard monitoring efforts as needed
  • Install and maintain camera traps (including battery and SD card changes).
  • Safely transport camera trap equipment.
  • Install and check camera traps at natural springs with WCS staff.

Community Engagement

  • Support WCS partnerships with local administrations, herder groups, and other local stakeholders.
  • Facilitate communication, arrange meetings, and build trust with communities.
  • Support existing CBOs partners in preparing Natural Resource Fee (NRF) funding applications.
  • Guide establishment of a new CBO, including documentation and official endorsement.
  • Support the designation of wildlife refuge areas for CBOs.
  • Facilitate collaboration between CBOs, volunteer rangers, and local governments.

Data Collection and Reporting

  • Accurately collect and record monitoring data.
  • Ensure proper use and safe storage of equipment.
  • Ensure regular communication and submit timely reports summarizing fieldwork, engagement activities, and challenges in Mongolian.

4. Deliverables

  • Camera traps installed and maintained at agreed sites.
  • Monthly reports by the 25th of each month summarising all efforts, including fieldwork activities, snow leopard monitoring, camera trap operations, community engagement, and CBO support, with key findings, progress, and recommendations.

5. Duration and Location

  • Period: 1 September – 31 December 2025
  • Location: Umnugovi Province, Mongolia (Bayandalai, Khurmen, and Nomgon soums)

6. Qualifications

  • Extensive knowledge of Umnugovi’s landscape, wildlife, and communities.
  • Commitment to nature conservation.
  • Ability to work in remote and challenging conditions.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills with local stakeholders.

7. Supervision and Payment

The consultant will report to the Governance and Community Manager, WCS Mongolia. Payment will be made in monthly instalments upon submission and approval of deliverables as per the consultancy agreement.
