WCS, Mongolia Program Overview:
Established in Ulaanbaatar in 2003, WCS Mongolia has spent more than two decades working to conserve the country’s wildlife and ecosystems. The program applies a science-based, landscape-level approach to support the protection and restoration of Mongolia’s ecological integrity. WCS Mongolia works in partnership with government agencies, local communities, NGOs, and the private sector to advance biodiversity conservation, maintain ecological connectivity, and support sustainable land use. Its work spans wildlife research and monitoring, protected area management, community-based conservation, policy engagement, infrastructure planning, One Health, and climate change adaptation. In 2024, WCS Mongolia launched its five-year strategy to 2030, structured around three priorities: enhancing ecological function, ensuring functional connectivity, and strengthening climate resilience. These guide efforts to safeguard Mongolia’s ecosystems over the long term.
Job Summary:
The Conservation Technology Officer will support the delivery of conservation technology activities within WCS Mongolia’s Governance Program. Working closely with the Conservation Governance Coordinator, the position will strengthen protected area management, natural resource governance, and wildlife monitoring by supporting government agencies, protected area administrations, and local partners to adopt and effectively use conservation technologies.
The role will focus on building partner capacity through training, mentoring, and technical support for tools such as SMART and other digital technologies used for patrol management, monitoring, and data collection. The position will also provide GIS and spatial analysis support to Governance Program activities and contribute to project implementation, reporting, and adaptive management.
As WCS Mongolia’s conservation technology portfolio evolves, the responsibilities of this position may expand to support additional technologies, projects, and partnerships across the Governance Program and, where appropriate, the broader WCS Mongolia Program.
Major Responsibilities:
Conservation Technology for Governance
- Support the implementation of conservation technology activities within the Governance Program.
- Provide technical support to government agencies, protected area administrations, community rangers, and other partners in the use of SMART and other conservation technologies.
- Help maintain and improve technology systems that strengthen protected area management, patrol planning, monitoring, and natural resource governance.
- Troubleshoot technical issues and provide ongoing user support.
Capacity Building
- Deliver practical training and mentoring on SMART, GIS, mobile data collection, and other relevant conservation technologies.
- Develop training materials and user guidance for partners.
- Conduct regular field visits to strengthen partner capacity and support implementation.
- Promote good practices in data management and quality assurance.
GIS and Technical Support
- Produce maps and spatial analyses to support Governance Program activities.
- Maintain GIS datasets and spatial information relevant to Governance Program projects.
- Support project teams with data management, reporting, and visualization.
- Assist with the management and organization of monitoring data.
Project Support
- Contribute technical inputs to project work plans, reports, donor deliverables, and monitoring frameworks.
- Participate in meetings, workshops, and technical working groups as requested.
- Work collaboratively with other WCS Mongolia staff to support successful delivery of Governance Program objectives.
- Provide technical support to other WCS Mongolia projects where appropriate and as priorities and capacity allow.
Job qualifications:
Education
- Bachelor’s degree in Geography, Geographic Information Systems (GIS), Environmental Science, Ecology, Conservation Biology, Natural Resource Management, Computer Science, Information Technology, or another relevant field.
- A Master’s degree is desirable but not required.
Experience
- At least two years of relevant professional experience in conservation, GIS, environmental management, natural resource management, or a related field.
- Experience using GIS software such as ArcGIS or QGIS.
- Experience providing technical support or training to government agencies, NGOs, community groups, or other partners is desirable.
- Experience with conservation technologies such as SMART, EarthRanger, KoboToolbox, camera trap management, mobile data collection platforms, or similar systems is an advantage.
Knowledge and Skills
- Proficiency in GIS software (e.g. ArcGIS or QGIS) and Microsoft Office.
- Interest in applying technology to support biodiversity conservation and protected area management.
- Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
- Good communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively with government partners, local communities, and multidisciplinary teams.
- Ability to learn new technologies and adapt to evolving project needs.
- Excellent written and spoken Mongolian. Intermediate written and spoken English.
- Willingness to travel regularly to remote field locations across Mongolia.
